Math Assessment

What math do you need to know to succeed?
At Royal Roads University, we pride ourselves on a supportive learning community that will enable you to succeed at your educational goals. This means ensuring that we can help prepare people to the very best of our ability - and theirs. To this end, our faculty has taken time to study and understand some of the key learning challenges experienced by our students.

In other words, it's time to talk about math.

A significant number of individuals have difficulty with math when they enter business programs. Many have not taken math courses for years; others have always avoided a subject they find brings more struggle than satisfaction. Yet honestly assessing one's math ability, and taking action to get the help you need - ahead of time - could save you hours of catch-up work later. This is why we encourage ALL prospective students to ask themselves the questions we list below.

After all, you've already decided you're interested in the Royal Roads Faculty of Management, so we know you're up for a challenge.

Assessing your math skill level

We ask you, first of all, to ask yourself a few questions:

  1. Did you avoid math in school?
  2. Were you unhappy with the marks you received in high school math?
  3. Have you encountered major difficulties in college level courses in areas such as math, accounting, finance or statistics?
  4. In a work or personal situation that involves calculations or interpretation of numbers do you usually rely on somebody else to do the work for you?
  5. Have you been out of the education system for several years and feel unsure about your math capabilities?
  6. If you answered yes to any of the above we recommend that you attempt our math quizzes. These quizzes were developed in house by faculty who teach quantitative courses, and reflect the weaknesses that they have observed over the past five years.

The Math Quizzes

We have developed two quizzes. By completing of both of these you'll be able to assess your skill level and if necessary, take remedial action.

If remedial action is indicated, then you will have helped yourself significantly by finding out now as opposed to when you are in the middle of a program. A satisfactory quiz score indicates that, given the requisite effort, you will be able to successfully complete courses in areas such as accounting, finance and statistics.

Our questions are not mental arithmetic so you will require a pencil, paper and calculator to complete the quizzes.

Each quiz consists of twenty questions that cover a variety of topics. You have the following options regarding completion of the quizzes:

Options Description Direction
1 Complete each quiz online After completing and sending each quiz you will receive a report that shows
(i) your score
(ii) a report that provides a list of the questions you answered incorrectly, together with the corresponding answers
Determine the average percentage score for the two quizzes.
You can print the report and review it later.
2 Download a PDF file for each quiz
Download question and answer files for each quiz
Print each quiz and fill in the answers
Compare your answers to the answer guide and compute your scores
Determine the average percentage score for the two quizzes

Note: To write an online Quiz, you must have Macromedia Flash player installed on your system.
