We spend a large part of our lives engaged with media of various forms, be they print or electronic. Yet, most of us lack a basic understanding of how the media we depend on for information, entertainment, and human connection work. 

 

Five Lessons for Doing Business in Mexico

Pedro G. Márquez P, BCom, MA, PhD, Dean, Faculty of Management

Dr. Márquez  is a Professor of Strategic Management and International Business. After obtaining an equivalent degree to a BCom at ITAM at Mexico City, he earned a MA (Poli Sci) and PhD (Management and Poli Sci) from the University of Calgary. He joins Royal Roads University from the business school at the Tecnologico de Monterrey at Mexico City, where he served as Dean and Department Head.  

Pedro studies Strategic Management and International Business with a special emphasis on Business Ethics and SMEs. He has co-authored book chapters and journal articles on NAFTA, founder centrality, comparative attitudes towards business ethical dilemmas and entrepreneurship education. Until recently, he managed a custom-designed executive education program for CEMEX, supported upon a strategic partnership between Tecnologico de Monterrey, Stanford University and INSEAD.  

 

Improving Organizational Culture for People and the Bottom Line

Recently have we begun to recognize the impact of organizational culture on our work-lives, including productivity and profitability, as well as its effect on our personal lives. Organizational culture is “the way we do things around here”, whether we are aware of it or not.  It is the DNA, the distinctive character, of our organizations. We are also beginning to be able to measure culture which enables us to improve it.  

 

Technology and Tourism

This session explores the effects technology has on shifting power in the distribution channel from suppliers and intermediaries to individual consumers, and its implications to the organization of business.

 

Prior to starting with Royal Roads University, Rod was President and CEO of Tourism British Columbia since its establishment as a Crown corporation in 1997. As CEO of Tourism BC, he led the global marketing of Super, Natural British Columbia, during which time he served as a past member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Tourism Commission, the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation and the Pacific Asia Travel Association. 

 

Ethics and Leadership in Times of Chaos

This session explores ethical issues facing leaders in disaster contexts, with examples drawn from the response to the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.

Jean was employed by the Canadian Red Cross for over 25 years before joining RRU last March. She began her involvement with disaster response 20 years ago with the Edmonton Tornado. She returned in the spring of 2007 from a two year posting in Indonesia, as the Country Representative for the Canadian Red Cross tsunami program. Working with some of the worst tsunami affected areas, Jean lead a team of over 120 people to improve the living conditions of those displaced by the tsunami, and provide safe permanent housing and other supports, enabling the return of over 15,000 beneficiaries to 30 villages in Aceh, Indonesia.
