School of Communication and Culture Convocation Awards
Each year, select graduate students from the MA Professional Communication and MA Intercultural and International Communication programs in the School of Communication and Culture at Royal Roads University will be recognized for their excellence in research through three research awards to be announced at the November convocation ceremony.
Lorna Malcolmson Memorial Award
Lorna Malcolmson died of cancer in 2011 and was a MAPC 2009 graduate who wrote her final research paper as a screenplay depicting the development of Frankfurt School cast in a modern setting. This award is for an outstanding multi modal thesis.
Diana Beeson Memorial Award
Diana Beeson is Michael Real’s wife whom we recently lost to cancer. Diana was a formidable academic in the areas of writing and journalism. This award is for a thesis demonstrating excellence of scholarship.
Michael Real Award
Michael Real is a professor of Communication in the School of Communication and Culture at RRU. He is a celebrated scholar in the areas of media and culture. This award is for an outstanding research paper.
These awards are determined based on the degree to which the thesis and research paper demonstrated the following criteria:
- critical professionalism
- innovative and systems thinking
- leading change
- leading learning
- valuing diversity
- fostering interdependence
Recipients of the award must qualify based on the following additional criteria:
- submitted a research paper or thesis within the selection year
- enrolled in the MAPC or MAIIC program during the selection year
- eligible to graduate in the selection year
