Royal Roads University admission requirements fall into two categories; standard admission and flexible assessment. Program specific admission requirements should be reviewed carefully before applying. AdmissionsProgram-Specific Admission

Royal Roads University has transfer agreements with many post-secondary institutions in Canada and international.  Royal Roads reviews the curriculum of the programs at other institutions to ensure that they meet the educational foundation required for a student to be successful in the program.  In some instances, additional courses to the diploma must be completed to meet the admission requirements. While transfer agreements make it easy for students to plan their education path, it is not necessary to have a transfer agreement in place to apply to a Royal Roads program.

DL stands for Distance Learning and means studying online via the Internet.

Blended means there is a mix of both online (DL) and on-campus study. Some courses include periods of both and others are either fully on campus or fully online.

No. The on-campus courses cannot be done online. They have specifically been designed for face-to-face delivery and are not available in an online model.

Yes. The design and focus of programs at Royal Roads University is one in which strong emphasis is placed on the concept of the learning community.  Many programs achieve this through the cohort-model of delivery, where all students start and journey through the program as one group.

No. Most Royal Roads University programs are delivered in a cohort model where students begin and complete the program together.  The program, although asynchronous, is structured with course start and end dates with hard deadlines for assignments and exams.  The flexibility in the program comes when you choose to study or attend online in ones learn site.  The learn site can be accessed at any time of day or night.

Yes.  Royal Roads University was created to provide working professionals with accessible education. The programs are designed so that one can work and have life balance while earning their degree. The delivery model of most Royal Roads programs is short face-to-face periods of classes (residency periods) combined with distance learning (DL) through a learning platform based in the Internet.  One attends the residency periods at Royal Roads University in Victoria, B.C., Canada, then goes home to take classes over the Internet.

No, students who wish to return to the program may request reinstatement through the Registrar’s Office.  Please review the student status information on the Academic Regulations pages.

The DSocSci is a professional degree program that focuses on the interdisciplinary applications of the social sciences to our contemporary world. Through such applied research, the program addresses complex real-world problems at the organizational, community, and societal level. The program responds to the national and global demand for workplace leaders with doctoral-level research skills who have the capacity for social and organizational innovation in support of sustainable organizations, communities, and societies.

Individuals in professional appointments who seek to advance their applied research skills and increase their ability to provide analytical leadership to solve complex real-world problems. This degree is likely to be of particular interest to policy analysts, senior administrators, or executives from the public, private, or non-profit sector who work in areas such as natural resource management, health care, global security, professional communication, disaster relief, humanitarian aid, conflict management, values-based leadership, environmental sustainability, or learning and technology. Working professionals wishing to move from a practitioner status to a scholar-practitioner status and to acquire the terminal professional degree.

The program is intended to graduate scholar-practitioners with the following abilities:

The capacity to combine methods and concepts from across social science disciplines to more effectively examine complex social problems than is possible using traditional single or interdisciplinary approaches;

Doctoral-level analytical and research skills that allow the study of questions with specific and immediate application to one’s organization or workplace. The ability to create new knowledge and to provide intellectual leadership and direction to specific fields, organizations, and work settings.

The DSocSci is Canada’s first applied research doctorate designed exclusively for working professionals. It provides an alternative to traditional doctoral programs by focusing on directly applicable solutions to complex problems in the workplace, community, or society.

Canadian statistics show that two out of three PhD graduates will not become university professors but work in non-university settings. Our degree speaks to this need; it is exclusively designed for career professionals, not for emerging young scholars who seek a traditional research-teaching career in the academy. The program will create specialized but applied knowledge and be built around individual candidates’ professional experience.

Royal Roads University was established to offer undergraduate, graduate, and executive programs solely in applied and professional fields. Its mandate is to be a distinct, special purpose university serving working professionals in British Columbia, Canada, and the world at large. Over the past decade, the University has developed an innovative and flexible approach to graduate education. This approach enables students to undertake formal learning for application to real-world challenges while maintaining their career appointments. As a result the University delivers the largest number of applied and professional graduate programs in British Columbia and has emerged as Canada’s University for Working Professionals. The offering of this doctoral degree completes the suite of applied degrees available to working professionals.

This program is delivered through a combination of short, intensive residencies on campus, web-based courses and a dissertation. It employs the cohort model. More.

RRU alumni will be given the same consideration as applicants with master’s degrees from other institutions.

Applicants may compete for one entrance award value at $5,000.

Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
Each year up to six Royal Roads University students may participate in a nation-wide competition for renewable awards valued between $20,000 and $35,000. The Canadian Federal Government distributes funding to SSHRC for the purpose of providing special recognition and support to doctoral students in research training for the fields of social science and humanities through the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships, and J.-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program: Doctoral Scholarships. These programs aim to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly-qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies.

For more information on eligibility requirements, please visit the SSHRC website.

RBC Royal Bank Education Financing Package
RBC Royal Bank offers a Professional Studies Student Line of Credit option to students admitted to the Doctor of Social Sciences program. Admitted applicants may receive up to $75,000 toward tuition fees and text book costs while completing their doctoral degree (up to $25,000 annually). This line of credit is available subject to credit approval and at an interest rate of Prime + 1%. During their studies and for up to 12 months following graduation, students only pay the interest. The principal portion is repayable over a maximum of 15 years. For more information, please contact Jason Craveiro, Account Manager, RBC Westshore Town Centre, at 250-391-1038.

All transfer credit must be approved by the Dean and Registrar as per RRU policy. Such credit must demonstrate a high level of competency. RRU is a member of the Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies and participates in the Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies Agreement.

A doctoral student will be advanced to doctoral candidacy status after successfully completing the comprehensive exams.

Once a student has successfully completed the comprehensive exams, she/he may commence work on the dissertation. However, all applicants must have a dissertation research proposal when applying for admission.

To qualify for the DSocSci, candidates must satisfy the examiners that their dissertation and their defence of the dissertation satisfy criteria approved by the RRU Academic Council. In principle, these criteria will encompass the following requirements:

  • The results of the research make a distinct interdisciplinary contribution to applied scholarship in the social sciences.
  • The dissertation and the defence of the dissertation should demonstrate a high degree of original work, and understanding and knowledge of the topic area.

Evidence of originality may be demonstrated by a combination of the following:

  • the development of a new critical analysis of a practical issue or challenge;
  • the development of a new theory from practice;
  • the novel application of existing theory to a practical challenge; or
  • the discovery of a new professional approach to practice.

The dissertation should be written to a standard for professional and academic communication. It should be evident that the dissertation can be the basis for a published book, a monograph or a series of articles, and a significant application in the field.

At the oral defence the candidate must successfully:

  • Defend the contents of the dissertation;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to the topic and fields of study;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the literature in the field (s) and the work of other scholars.

The Examination Committee may recommend one of the following decisions by majority vote:

  • Pass;
  • Pass with minor changes;
  • Major changes required; or
  • Not acceptable.

Subsequent to the oral defence, the Chair of the Examination Committee must confirm the decision in writing to the candidate and to the members of the DSocSci Program Management Committee.

The difference between the two options reflects the focus of the degree-a focus which reflects the structure of the Canadian environmental profession. These options, in terms of course content, are set out in the ‘curriculum’ pages of both the Royal Roads University and CCEE websites. The program is structured so that students are able to support and develop their current and future career goals. Although it is likely that students taking the Master of Science option will have a background in the sciences this need not be the situation for everybody. Likewise, it is not essential that participants entering the Master of Arts option have a background in the humanities or social sciences. Applicants should be guided by their career needs.

Upon application to the program, and at the beginning of the first course, a student's academic plans will be discussed with the Program Director.

Normally, applicants will have clear, career-related goals when applying to the program. These goals will be set out in their statement accompanying their application. In most circumstances, but not exclusively, the decision to follow either the Master of Arts or Master of Science stream will be determined by the applicant prior to submission of their application. If in doubt, applicants are encouraged to discuss their options with the Program Director. During the first week of the ENVR 500 course students will set out their proposed program schedule.

There are certain key milestones that direct progress through the program. The ENVP 500 course will act as the introduction to the program. The Research Methods course (ENVR 550), which is a prerequisite for both the Practicum and the Research Paper options, must be completed before embarking on either of these options. The Practicum and Research Paper options will begin after completing at least 20 credits in the program.

The three-credit Practicum gives the student the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in the program to either ot their workplace or an organization they are associated with. The student's topic will normally be developed in conjunction with their employer (or other program leader). It will require a written proposal to be developed in conjunction with the Program Director and a written report addressing the implementation of their topic.
The six-credit Research Paper may also be workplace or organization-based, but may also give the student the opportunity to develop greater depth in an area of particular relevance to their career goals. The topic will be developed in discussions with the Program Director and will require a formal proposal and final research report.

There are several major differences:

  • The MEP is course-based whereas the MEM has a major thesis research component in addition to required courses.
  • The MEP is based upon the structure of the Canadian environmental profession, using this professional structure as a basis for the curriculum; whereas while the MEM also reflects a professional focus, it is broader in scope.
  • The MEP is delivered entirely online whereas the MEM balances short on-campus residences with on-line learning.
  • The MEP may be completed within three years; the MEM is a more structured program to be completed within two years.

Applicants can access Denver University courses by using the ‘letter of permission’ (LOP) procedure. When students wish to register for a Denver University course, they will need to submit a LOP form for approval. This form is then sent by the Royal Roads University Registrar’s Office to Denver University. Once the course is completed, Denver University will inform the student of their grade and will forward their grade to the Royal Roads University Registrars Office to be recorded on their Royal Roads transcript.

The 2010 cost compares favourably with the rates for Royal Roads University courses. The current rate is $484 (US) per credit. Since the Denver University courses are normally four credit courses (which is the equivalent of Royal Roads three credits) the cost would be $1936 US per course. Students pay fees directly to Denver University.

The MA in Intercultural and International Communication program is primarily designed for individuals who have significant experience working with diverse populations, in multicultural settings, or abroad. Such experience has included: working in an embassy abroad; teaching English as a Second Language in other nations; volunteering or working with refugees, immigrants, or First Nations communities; military and peacekeeping service abroad; providing human resources services in organizations that work with diverse staff or clientele, such as diversity managers in hospitals or corporations; covering international or multicultural issues as a journalist (e.g., editing an ethnic community newspaper).

The majority of our students are residents of British Columbia; however, we see an increasing number of students from abroad and other areas of Canada. The student cohort reflects a wide range in backgrounds and personal characteristics: many students are multilingual and multi-ethnic; many have spent significant time (two to six years) abroad; many are second- or first-generation immigrants. Some students may be in their 20s; others in their 60s. They tend to bring different religious and cultural beliefs and practices to their program of study, and more so than in other topics of study, these often come to the forefront within this program.

Participation in such a diverse cohort therefore constitutes an integral aspect of the learning experience. The ability to succeed in teamwork in a highly diverse group of students and make a contribution to a positive intercultural climate are part of the program’s learning outcomes.

Major Project

The major project is an independent, typically work-based, problem-solving project. In general, the scope, breadth and structure of major projects will be more flexible than is expected in a thesis. The scope of this integrative learning activity is substantial, such that a client company or organization would normally pay a substantial consulting fee for the level of work undertaken. A major project is typically practical and data driven. Background literature underlying the project may be more selective and practical in scope and less theoretical than would typically be expected for a research thesis. Publication is not a requirement, and the major project will not be submitted to the National Library of Canada. Follow this link for more information.

The MA in Interdisciplinary Studies major project (INDS 640) should constitute approximately 400 hours of effort by the student; successful completion will result in the awarding of 12 credit hours. The student will work with the program head to select a supervisor, and in some instances a sponsor as well. An MA in Interdisciplinary Studies Major Project Handbook is available upon request. All students working with human subjects in their research must submit an ethics review form for approval to the Office of Research.

Thesis

A thesis is a written project of a systematic study of a significant problem. The thesis demonstrates the ability to analyze existing research, collate or collect data and apply it in the context of an existing problem. The result is a de novo synthesis of theoretical and empirical information. The thesis identifies a problem, states the hypothesis or research question, identifies major assumptions, explains the significance for the undertaking, sets forth the sources for and methods of gathering information, analyzes the data and offers a conclusion or recommendation based on the data and theoretical framing. Appropriate standards of validity and reliability must be evident in tool development and data collection. The finished thesis evidences critical and independent thinking, appropriate organization and format and thorough documentation. These are typically published through deposit with the National Library and Archives Canada. Follow this link for more information.

The MA in Interdisciplinary Studies thesis (INDS 690) should constitute approximately 400 hours of effort by the student; successful completion will result in the awarding of 12 credit hours. The student will work with the program head to select a supervisor, and at least one other committee member in addition to the program head who serves on all theses committees.  Any student entering the program as of January, 2012 will be required to do an oral defense of her/his thesis, which may take place via teleconferencing if the student cannot come to campus.  An MA in Interdsicplinary Studies Thesis Handbook is available upon request. All students working with human subjects in their research must submit an ethics review form for approval to  the Office of Research.

You must complete all coursework before beginning your major project or thesis.  From the time of course completion you have one year to complete either the major project or thesis.

Yes, there is a course-based option for completion of the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies degree that does not require that you do a project or thesis.

English is the primary language of instruction and communication in all programs at Royal Roads University. All applicants seeking admission to the MA in Professional Communication program must have an adequate knowledge of written and spoken English as a prerequisite for admission to the university. If an applicant’s previous education took place in another language, they must score a minimum of 575 on the TOEFL test or acceptable alternative test. A higher score would enhance an applicant’s successful participation in the program.

Good writing skills are very important. An English Composition (or equivalent) university-level English course with B+ or better is a prerequisite. Alternatively, students should provide some other proof of your ability to write clear and correct English (eg. published writing; a marked essay from a previous course, with details about the marker and content).

After extensive market research, the School of Business has determined that the previous offering of MBA degrees in these areas were not truly meeting the needs of the market place, and the demand for these specializations had changed since they were first offered.  As such, the current MBA program offers elements of both of these in its core courses in order to reflect both the required emphasis on effective communication skills and the current trends and demands of the marketplace.

The School of Business previously offered an MBA in Executive Management with a specialization in Leadership.  This offering proved to be highly attractive to individuals who wished to combine the core business competencies with leadership theories and practices.  We couldn’t agree more!  As such, our current offering of the MBA in Executive Management now contains a much stronger emphasis on leadership for all students, not just those in the previous Leadership stream.  We feel that by making this content available to all MBA students, we are better preparing our students to be effective leaders in their communities and workplaces.

The School of Business is exploring the development of post-MBA diplomas that will focus on specific specializations of interest to business students.  These are still in development, and more information will be provided when appropriate.

The MBA program at RRU is primarily different from other MBA degree programs offered with respect to the method of delivery.  The program is a combination of short, face-to-face residency sessions (called Experience Labs) that are held on campus in Victoria, B.C. and distance learning that is delivered over the internet.  This delivery model allows students from all over Canada and the world to take our MBA program without having to relocate to Victoria, B.C.  The program attracts an experienced working professional who brings a wealth of skills and knowledge to the learning environment.

The MBA program started in April 1999, and has been accepting students twice per year ever since.   As of 2010, we have over 1,600 graduates from the MBA program.

Typically, the MBA program at Royal Roads University attracts an experienced, mature working professional.  The average age of our students recently has been 40 years of age, with an average of 16 years of working experience.  We do also see students in their late 20s, as well as those in their 50s and 60s, who are working in a variety of different industry sectors.  Class sizes often range from 35-45, although some speciality courses (during Distance Learning Five) will have smaller class sizes.

Experience Lab (residency) Workload – Students should expect the residency periods to be quite rigorous. The normal classroom schedule is Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, although students can expect to be working in the evenings and weekends on individual and/or team assignments.  There will be some scheduled activities in the evenings, in addition to the normal classroom schedule. To gain the most from residency, students are strongly encouraged to avoid personal and other work commitments and focus solely on the activities of the residency.

Distance Learning Workload – Students will take two distance courses at a time, for a period of nine weeks (eight weeks of course material plus one week for final exam/project preparation). Each distance learning session will require a level of effort of approximately 25-30 hours per week. The average number of hours per week may vary depending on the student’s interest and/or familiarity with the subject matter.  In addition, average hours can be higher near the start of the MBA program as students become accustomed to working online.

There are short breaks between sessions that allow students a bit of time off.  Typically, these breaks are two weeks in length.  Please refer to the program schedule for complete information about course start and end dates.

The MBA program is designed to be completed in approximately 18 months.  There is no option to complete the program on a part-time basis.  However, if students need additional time to complete their major project (the Organizational Management Project or OMP), they may be eligible for project extensions.  Project extensions are three months in length of additional time, and are subject to the current Royal Roads University rates.  All graduate programs at Royal Roads must be completed within seven years.

Because of the strong emphasis on the cohort-model, it is preferred that all students in the MBA program take all courses.  However, if a student has a professional designation, such as a CGA, CMA or CA, they may be eligible for course exemption from up to three credits of accounting content.  Any other questions about course exemption should be directed to the MBA program staff.

The MBA program is not yet a member (nor do we hold accreditation) with any of the more widely recognized business school affiliations:  AMBA, EQUUS, or AACSB.  We are reviewing our interest in these memberships, but do not presently hold them.

The MBA degree at Royal Roads University meets the requirements of the Province of BC (as per our governance and Act), and therefore should be recognized by other post-secondary institutions both in Canada and around the world.  However, it will be up to the host institution to determine the suitability of the Royal Roads University MBA when considering it for other degree pursuits.

Graduates of the Royal Roads University MBA program have been successful in pursuing doctorate level programs at other institutions around the world.

Because of the demographic attracted to the Royal Roads University MBA program, almost all students are currently working full-time in an established career.  After completing the MBA program, students find themselves well-positioned for advancement with their current employer, or for other opportunities outside of their organization.  Salaries often increase while the student is enrolled in the MBA program, in addition to after completing the degree.

The BA in International Hotel Management program is a completion degree, meaning it condenses years three and four of undergraduate study into 12 months. The workload is significant and intense; 10-12 hour days are the norm.  For more information please visit the Learning Model page.

Students secure their internships independently, however, IHMN490, the International Hospitality Internship course, will provide you with job-hunting, resume-building, and interview skills essential to landing a position with a reputable organization. Students receive hands-on coaching and career path advice from the Internship and Industry Relations coordinator who works closely with students to develop an internship plan. Students are exposed to many key employers in the industry and have opportunities throughout the year to network with them. In addition, students learn how to develop social media skills to network and promote themselves professionally in today’s labour market.

The internship is the capstone to the BA in International Hotel Management program and can be the launch-pad to a student's career. This program has been strategically designed with career development in mind: the first three academic terms are delivered on campus, while the off-campus internship provides the finale to the program, enabling students to apply their learning in the field and continue on their career path from there. Since the program’s inception, the majority of graduates have been offered permanent positions by their host companies following their internships.

The BA in International Hotel Management degree is designed to arm graduates with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in a management position in the hospitality industry. As with any degree, however, it is up to the student to prove to employers that they are capable of such responsibility. We see many of our graduates begin their careers with hotel properties at entry-level positions, then progress to supervisory or management-level positions within a short period of time.

There are 17 three-credit courses in the BA in International Hotel Management program, plus a nine-credit internship course. All courses are designed to equip students with the necessary skills for a successful hospitality career. All courses are mandatory and there are no elective options.

No, the BA in International Hotel Management is a full-time, on-campus program.

The majority of our students are in their twenties, hold tourism and/or hospitality diplomas, and have some work experience in the field. Each cohort has a diversity of age (20 to 40 years of age); location; and experience.

There are some opportunities for part-time employment on campus. All positions are posted on the job postings page. Habitat (Royal Roads' cafeteria) hires casual catering staff and the Recreation Centre, Library, and Custodial Services occasionally hire on-call and casual employees. Also, around mid-April each year, Visitor Services recruit peak-season casual staff for the Retail Store and the Garden Booth.

Royal Roads University is a public university and a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). Royal Roads also holds the Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation, which is unique to B.C. educational institutions. Those planning to continue on to post-graduate education after the BA in International Hotel Management program, please check with the admissions department at the institution of interest for the most current information.

The MA in Tourism Management program is for managers, owners and executives in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Typically, students have a minimum five years experience in the tourism or hospitality industry. Please see the program admission and Flexible Assessment pages for more information.

We define values-based leadership (VBL) as “the exercise of influence to make a difference in relationships, teams, organizations and communities, through choices and decisions guided by explicit and consistently practiced values”. For additional definitions from thought leaders which emphasize different aspects of this perspective, and therefore complement each other, please follow this link. Culture is the DNA of an organization; it influences every aspect of organizational life so it has a profound effect on an organization’s capability to deliver on its goals, attract and retain talented employees, engage its workforce optimally, attract investment, and win the loyalty of customers.  Global transformations have rendered many organizational cultures out of date and, therefore, dysfunctional. Learn more about organizational culture, and how to improve it.

Some of the most impressive work on changing organizational cultures for the better has been accomplished by Richard Barrett and his colleagues at the Barrett Values Centre (BVC) who have developed Cultural Values Assessments and related practices that have been used in nearly 2000 organizations in over 50 countries. This process, which incorporates the CTT assessment tool, has permitted the measurement of organizational cultures in order to pinpoint cultural strengths and weaknesses so they can be worked on and changes can be monitored. Students therefore not only gain certification in this valuable, internationally recognized tool (a value of approximately $2000 Cdn), but also practice its application within an fully integrated process which supports increased competence in the implementation of  cultural transformation. Students may be employees of an organization, independent consultants, entrepreneurs, community leaders, or those seeking a return to work after a hiatus. Royal Roads provides several bursaries and scholarships for people who can show financial need.

Since the focus of our educational model is applied knowledge, many of our programs have field residency requirements. Other programs require students to undertake action-research or consulting projects that allow for exploration and applied research in an organizational context. Students are encouraged to approach employers, or prospective employers about completing a research project that addresses a need with the organization. This kind of initiative can lead to immediate recognition of the value of your education to the recipient organization. Please visit your program of interest to find details about internships, final projects, outcomes, and more.

There are several ways to apply for an Royal Roads University program, course or degree. Visit our application page to find out more.

Transfer credit for individual courses isn’t normally encouraged due to the cohort, team-based model and integrated course structure of our programs. However, many of our graduate certificate and diploma programs can be used as credit in larger graduate degree programs. Please ask before enrolling in a course if you want to get credit for the course in a degree program. Not all certificate and diploma programs provide this kind of credit.

Royal Roads University has many block transfer agreements with universities, colleges, and university-colleges. Applicants who have completed approved programs at partner institutions, with the minimum required GPA, are deemed to have met the academic course requirements for admission to the specified program. Admission to Royal Roads programs is based on academics and life experience and are processed on a competitive basis.

Through flexible assessment, our Admissions Committees will look for the equivalent of undergraduate learning through a combination of post-secondary education plus work and life experience. Successful candidates are often those who have some post-secondary education (college diploma or certificate, or incomplete undergraduate studies), plus several years of work or volunteer experience. Please visit the admission section of your program of interest for more information. This student-centred approach opens doors to higher learning for qualified candidates who otherwise would not meet traditional admission requirements in terms of formal academic training and serves the needs of a diverse group of students. Ideal candidates for Flexible Assessment include, but are not limited to, self-directed and highly motivated people who demonstrate high levels of program-specific knowledge and skills, and who possess strong interpersonal, research, and communication skills.

Most graduate and undergraduate degree programs offer short term on-campus residency study periods. These vary from two to five weeks. For more information, please refer to specific program areas of interest.

Royal Roads was created on the former Royal Roads Military College. It is considered one of the most beautiful University campuses in Canada, overlooking the majestic Olympic Mountains across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Hatley Park was designated a National Historic Site by the federal government in 2000. Find out  more by visiting the Hatley Park website.

The campus is located at 2005 Sooke Road in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.  Please refer to the campus information page to find directions on how to get here.

Royal Roads campus was home to a military college from 1940 to 1995. The military college was closed before becoming the home to Royal Roads University. The Department of National Defence owns the property and Royal Roads University leases the property from the crown for its University operations and assumes the stewardship responsibility for maintaining the site. There are still many aspects of the university that hearken back to its fine military legacy and Royal Roads University considers this an important and cherished part of the history of this site. The university continues to support our ties to the military and several members of our staff and alumni are a part of that history. However, today Royal Roads is open to everyone - serving the community through offering formal academic programs, professional studies, continuing studies and interpretive services to visitors to the site.

Maclean's does not rank schools that have a specialized mission.  Because Royal Roads University is the first public university in Canada created to solely address the knowledge needs of working professionals through applied and professional programs, Maclean’s magazine doesn’t always publish our information in their ranking. Nevertheless Macleans’s continues to ask for our information every year and we submit it for their consideration.
