National Indigenous Peoples Day 2019
The community is invited to National Indigenous Peoples Day 2019 celebrations June 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Royal Roads University on the traditional lands of the Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) and Lkwungen (Songhees) ancestors and families.
The day-long event will include Indigenous practices and protocols, art, food and games:
- canoe landing protocol and canoe challenge
- drumming, singing and dancing
- children’s field games
- Indigenous foods
- craft workshops
- artists and vendors
- a walk along Colwood Creek with Cowichan Nation Elder Kenneth Elliot to learn about the history of the land and Indigenous plants
Last year more than 2,000 people were welcomed to the celebrations.
Admission is free. Limited parking is available. The university encourages the public to consider taking public transit or walking or cycling to Royal Roads along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail. On-campus transportation between event locations is available for Elders and guests who need assistance.
National Indigenous Peoples Day 2019 is hosted by the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, the University of Victoria, Camosun College, the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, Indigenous Perspectives Society, ISPARC, Power to Be, VanCity and Royal Roads University Indigenous Education and Student Services.
