Michael Ableman to give annual Bateman Lecture at Royal Roads
Farmer, author and photographer Michael Ableman will deliver this year’s Bateman Lecture at Royal Roads University Aug. 7. Presented by the School of Environment and Sustainability, this lecture is part of the Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication residency.
Through powerful images and storytelling, Ableman will bring attendees on a personal and agricultural journey around the world, into his own fields and Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where he farms with people dealing with long-term addiction and mental illness.
Ableman is one of the early visionaries of the urban agriculture movement. He is founder of the non-profit Center for Urban Agriculture in Goleta, California. Ableman is also co-founder and director of Sole Food Street Farms in Vancouver, a project that transforms vacant urban land for farming and empowerment of people with limited resources.
Ableman is the subject of the award-winning PBS film Beyond Organic narrated by Meryl Streep. He is author of Street Farm, Fields of Plenty, On Good Land and From the Good Earth.
The lecture is free and open to all students, faculty, staff and the public.
