Environmental Chemistry

Course Description:

ENSC 306: Introduces students to the study of the sources, reactions, transport, fate and effects of chemical species in the physical environment, with special emphasis on the reactions in natural waters, the atmosphere and geosphere. Basic concepts in thermodynamics, redox, solution equilibria and organic chemistry are employed. The principles of environmental sampling and analysis, including the importance and practice of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), are also discussed. Concludes with a brief overview of the management of waste and contaminated soils. Field and laboratory practical exercises and examples from applied research projects are used to reinforce the concepts presented.  (3 credits)
