Environmental Analysis and Remedial Technology

Course Description:

ENVR 582*: Environmental Analysis and Remedial Technologies (3 credits) The impact of various human activities on the environment is often a result of the introduction of physical and chemical substances into the surrounding air, water or land. Assessing the ways in which these substances affect the natural environment usually involves some observations and quantitative physical and chemical measurements. Data obtained are assessed by comparison to either the pristine environment, or to some existing environmental regulation and legislation. If a particular situation that is considered an environmental problem is encountered, measures are taken to reduce the impact of the contaminants of concern. An environmental monitoring program is usually designed after remediation to observe and measure temporal changes in the parameters of concern.

The course is framed around three main themes:
• The application of physical and chemical principles to the analysis of trace metals and organic compounds in relationship to speciation, water quality, LRTAP and environmental remediation.
• Quality assurance in environmental analysis.
• The use of technology to reduce the effects of physical and chemical impacts
