How does it work?
Aligned with the competencies found in the curricular design of many degree programs at Royal Roads University, the Continuing Studies Professional Skills Management Certificate, the Professional and Applied Communication Skills Certificate, and the Ecological Literacy Certificate include a comprehensive and experiential suite of short, non-credit courses designed to broaden our understanding and development of; communication and collaboration skills, social and personal responsibility, leadership , mentorship and stewardship; design, planning and performance; diverse perspectives, and ways of knowing; systems and critical thinking; creativity; and community and relationship-building. Each certificate has unique competency areas relative to the discipline and moreover, it will be necessary to complete two elective courses for each certificate program in order to fulfill all completion requirements.
Begin learning when you most need to. You may start your certificate program at any point during the year (the certificates are comprised of individual stand alone courses that commonly have multiple offerings and are not necessarily designed to be taken in a consecutive order) and then you will have the opportunity to complete the necessary core and elective components within a comfortable 1 or 2 year period from your own start date.
We recognize that one size does not always fit all and therefore it is also possible to customize your certificate to include other courses available through Continuing Studies to match your specific learning needs with the approval of the Director or Program Coordinator. Let us help you design a program that is right for you us

continuingstudies@royalroads.ca How much time will it take to complete a certificate? In a balance of cost-awareness and sound pedagogy, we have, where possible, kept learning time to eight hours per competency with the exception of some intensive coursework that requires more time for synthesis and practice. In addition, the completion of each certificate requires that you choose two electives from our electives list although numbers of competency areas to fulfill may vary within different certificate programs. Courses are offered throughout the year – sometimes several times during the year – in order to allow for a comfortable completion within one or two years of study.
What are competencies?
Competencies form the basis of behaviour and performance where developing skills and aptitudes can foster enhanced confidence, as well as professional and personal enrichment
What are electives? Electives are courses that you choose to round out your learning experience. There are a plethora of electives offered in the 2009-10 calendar.
Will I receive credit?
“Students who complete one of the Professional Management Skills Certificates, the Professional and Applied Communication Skill Certificate or the Ecological Literacy Certificate (non-credit) in Continuing Studies, may receive recognition for prior learning as part of the admissions evaluation process for RRU credit programs (certificate, diploma, and degree).” – The Royal Roads Registrar
No credit toward a degree at Royal Roads University is awarded for study in Continuing Studies.
Can I customize a certificate to match my needs?
We recognize that one size does not fit all and many positions within organizations cross over into areas outside of the skill sets of these certificates. We can customize a program that corresponds most closely with your current professional needs and that accomplishes your learning objectives while successfully fulfilling the requirements of the certificate program.
