About this Certificate

Aligned with the competencies found in the curricular design of the degree programs in the School of Environmental Sustainability at Royal Roads University, the Continuing Studies Carbon and Energy Leadership Certificate includes a comprehensive and experiential suite of six short, non-credit modules designed to broaden understanding and development of carbon and energy leadership in terms of leading environmental action, adaption and mitigation and understanding climate change economics and financing.  

Overall Learning Outcomes: 

  • Hands on learning opportunities in the fields of energy efficiency, alternative energy, and carbon management in order to more fully understand and implement legislation
  • Understand more fully how behavioral choices and values drive and impact environmental issues
  • Develop your own carbon emissions reduction project for your community, home or organization
  • Learn key technologies and management practices for energy efficiency and renewable energy and develop awareness about clean energy solutions
  • Develop strategies to overcome financial and organizational barriers to the implementation of energy projects within organizations and in communities
  • An opportunity to consider the larger context of energy production, distribution and use, and introduce new opportunities and ways of thinking about how to reduce energy use and how to develop or utilize low carbon sources of energy
  • Understand climate change impacts for adaptation strategies and planning purposes
  • An opportunity to explore innovative ways of working within communities to lead environmental adaptation and mitigation
  • Learn how to better market and communicate environmental issues to engage the public and influence change
  • Understand the full environmental and social costs of products and decisions
  • Learn (and begin) carbon projects on the ground
  • Understand the breadth of what the low carbon economy means
  • More fully understand the economic aspects of global climate change with a focus on emissions taxes and carbon markets in the new low carbon economy

The program is designed in six sector modules of two course units – with the option of either online or face to face learning. In order to achieve a Certificate in Carbon and Energy Leadership, students are required to complete 6 courses.

The on campus courses are one day (approx. 8 hours) training seminars in face to face format. Online courses are three weeks in length in a/synchronistic time and will require approximately 5 -8 hours of your time each week depending on the course design. Any course can be taken as a stand alone and it is not necessary for students to take all courses or enrol for the certificate.
