Use the beauty of the forest to create vibrant paintings filled with flowing shapes and mysterious light. On the first morning, we’ll be talking about painting the ‘intimate’ forest: where the beauty lies and what to look for in subject matter. Ann will show slides of paintings from forest settings and of the various stages of developing a painting. Then we will take a walk through the magnificent trails of the forest and stream area on campus and you will choose and photograph what it is you would like to paint.
If the weather and your location permits, you can choose to paint outside, either at ‘your spot’ or at a convenient outdoor location. On both days, Ann will demo both technique and the gradual process of working with your image so that it represents what you see and how you feel when you look at it. You will receive ample encouraging feedback and tips. Beginners are welcome – who cares what that tree or plant really looks like – for that you have your photograph! This is about giving yourself a special day and experience expressive painting.
This is also oil painting. It is messy! Wear comfortable, old clothes that don’t mind getting stained and comfortable shoes for walking in the woods.
Topics:
- Medium: oil on board or canvas
- Composition
- Defining and painting major shapes
- Background techniques: support, not competition
Facilitator: Ann Perodeau believes that when we see ourselves in relation to the things we own or our job titles, we diminish and distort our purpose and being. When we see ourselves as a part of the greater living landscape, we come to awe, humility, and an understanding of our place as stewards, not owners or consumers and lose our sense of clock-time. As painter and educator, Ann does both as an act of love and a way to become more herself by living into the mystery, the living landscape of her life.
