The Joy of Poetry:
Music for the Mind and Soul TAAC2022
Music from all cultures and epochs can be said to be made up of five elements. In this course, we will investigate those elements and walk through those five entrances into a musical garden where we will hear music more deeply. We will cultivate a musical intelligence that will allow us to become more aware of the elements and structures that make the music we love come alive. In considering these factors we will also look at how our Western-European tradition of music has evolved over the centuries. Whether your first musical love is for classical, jazz, folk, or for the music of a non-Western tradition, this course will open your ears to new ways of listening. You need no previous training in music, only a desire to be open to sounds both familiar and foreign.
Topics:
- Learning to identify and recognize the five basic elements of music and how to assimilate them into the listening experience
- Learning how the music of the Western European culture has developed over the centuries
Learning Outcomes:
- Learn to hear familiar music in new and exciting ways
- Bring unfamiliar music into your listening experience
- Learn how our music developed over the centuries
Facilitator: Denis Donnelly is a musician by inclination and by training, receiving his B.Mus Degree With Distinction from the University of Victoria. He is passionate about sharing his love of music with others. He was the Director of the Victoria Conservatory of Music for 15 years until 1999, and now conducts the Gettin' Higher Choir and the Soundings Vocal Ensemble, gives workshops, and is involved in many other musical activities. Denis believes that we often do not really hear music, but rather music becomes an ever-present accompaniment to our lives to which often don't give our full attention. Denis believes strongly that, when received consciously and with understanding, music can be a source of intense joy and satisfaction.
