Learning Model

Business Culture

Research on organizations indicates that it is important for new members to understand as much as possible about the culture of that organization before entering it. This understanding has been shown to directly relate to increased satisfaction and tenure. For prospective members of the Royal Roads University learning community, it’s important to understand some of the fundamental aspects of the Faculty of Management learning culture which, for some, will be different what they have already experienced.

Organizational Learning

At Royal Roads University embodies the ‘community of practice’ theme. Participants in the program are observers, in addition to a student and a coach. Often, defining a question will be as important as finding a solution. The ability to cope with change is essential as we have visiting instructors that may adapt courses to fit the issues of the day. Moreover, our programming approach and content is not always traditional. We value learning as a social process and accept responsibility for ourselves and others to participate fully in the entire experience whatever their educational and work-related background.

Team Work

A major part of a student’s experience, success, and learning revolves around group activities. In most courses, a significant part of a student’s evaluation is based on group work.

Consequently, students should expect to address the challenges and associated learning of group activities. For some, this may be especially demanding.

Attendance

To wholly meet the goals of the learning community, students are expected to attend all classes, workshops or other program events, or to participate fully in all on-line activities. There may be occasions when students feel that they fully understand the material being covered in a class or in an online discussion. In that event, they are expected to participate, adopting more of a coaching role. This is a particularly notable aspect of the Royal Roads University culture. While individual effort and performance is respected, we believe it is important to achieve results within an inclusive atmosphere that values diversity and the importance of the team.

Intensity

Students should understand that their learning opportunity at Royal Roads University demands considerable effort for the duration of the program. Students are expected to schedule their family time, work commitments, and non-statutory holidays so they are not absent from classes or required online sessions.
