York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe is a vision-inspired, mission-focused, values-driven leader.
Since being promoted to chief in December 2010 – in the midst of completing his MA in Leadership at Royal Roads University –Jolliffe has established a one-of-a-kind police leadership program for all levels of supervisory staff that focuses on accountability, team building, community engagement and fostering a culture that is committed to the vision, mission and values of the organization. Policing one million people in one of Canada’s most diverse communities, Jolliffe takes pride in the many outreach programs aimed at building relationships and trust with all residents.
Among his colleagues, Jolliffe is known as a strong, approachable and compassionate leader. In his two years at the helm, he has faced the ultimate challenge for a chief – the death of officers in the line of duty. Within months, York Regional Police lost two of its own.
Jolliffe led from the heart and showed exemplary support for the families and the profession of policing by challenging the ethics of the media and holding them accountable for broadcasting the radio transmissions of one of the fallen officer’s dying words. His actions culminated in an Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police campaign, currently underway, to garner province-wide support from all emergency service providers and advocate for changes to legislation that would protect the integrity and security of police radio transmissions.
Jolliffe was born and raised in York Region and, after policing in Edmonton for two years, returned to his home community to serve its members in 1981. His accomplishments as a leader during his 33 years of dedicated and innovative police service have been honoured with the Police Exemplary Service Medal and 30-Year Bar, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and the Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces medal.
Jolliffe is a progressive police leader and community builder who inspires trust and confidence within his command and across York Region.
