Visa Information For International Applicants Outside Canada

All international students who are considering applying to Royal Roads University to pursue their education must contact the Canadian Embassy nearest them regarding details and application for a Study Permit. Study Permit application procedures can take up to six months or more in some countries, so it is essential that applicants apply to Royal Roads University for admission early.

Most foreign students will need both a Temporary Resident Visa and a Study Permit to enter Canada if their course of study is longer than six months.

*Please note that Royal Roads University Graduate and Undergraduate Programs that are two years in length with three week residencies require students to have a valid study permit.

New Immigration Policy

On Jan. 31, 2005, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) introduced a new policy for foreign students in post-secondary studies in Canada. These students can now transfer between programs of study and institutions without applying for a change to the conditions of their study permit. They can also transfer between public and private institutions.

Previously, most foreign students could transfer between the same type of educational institution (for example, university to university or college to college), but could not transfer between different types of institutions (for example, university to college).

The new policy applies to students who have a valid study permit for training or studying at the post-secondary level, such as:

  • University
  • Community college, CEGEP, Institute
  • Private university, career college, academy, school or training institution
  • ESL/FSL and other language training

Renewing Your Study Permit

While in Canada, students may need to renew their Study Permit or change the conditions on their Study Permit.

Students must check the “valid until” date on the Study Permit. Students must also be sure to apply early if they need to renew it. Apply to change a permit at least 30 days before the current permit expires.

NB: If a Study Permit expires and a student has made an application to renew it, but has not had a decision yet, they can continue studying until they receive a decision.

Students must leave Canada once their permit expires or if they have not followed the conditions of their permit. In some cases, they may apply for a restoration of status.

Students should apply to renew their Study Permit visa if they intend to travel outside Canada and it will expire during that time.
