Accessibility Committee

Lisa's passion lies in recognizing and supporting accessibility challenges, especially those that are unseen. Many challenges she and those close to her face are not visible and, in some cases, not generally considered accessibility challenges.

A traditional upbringing where one hid any kind of difference was common in her community while growing up and she recognizes that these barriers still exist for many. Lisa firmly believes that every person encounters barriers to access in various situations, and fostering open dialogue and highlighting intent around accessibility is crucial for recognizing, supporting and broadening the concept of barrier-free access.

She is an active member of the Canadian Diabetes Association, advocating for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Recently, she has been a strong advocate for senior accessibility in private health facilities, taking on the role of a caregiver for a recently blind senior.

She also champions mental health support, particularly at a trauma level. Lisa is a proud participant in the Diversity Action Group and ReconciliACTION at RRU.

With a twenty-three-year career at RRU, including her role as a program coordinator in the global leadership programs, she has consistently welcomed every student and maintained a fervent passion for supporting student success and access to their aspirations, regardless of the paths they choose.

Her master’s capstone project is centered around barrier-free field trip experiences for post-secondary students. She examines accessibility from the perspective of actual access to learning experiences, whether they're local or at international locations. She also considers the post-experience reflections in a way that respects different ways of knowing and being.
