Mr. Tom Workman, BAA, MBA

Tom has worked in the news media and in corporate communications and marketing positions in the private, not-for-profit and government sectors for more than 20 years. Tom provides consulting services to a number of private sector and government clients in issues management, reputation management and other strategic communications needs. Accredited in financial planning and life and disability insurance, most of Tom's clients are in the financial services sector. Tom splits his time between Toronto and the west coast.

As a principal with Stevenson Kellogg/KPMG (management consulting services) for five years, Tom specialized in providing issues management advice to organizations undergoing corporate downsizing, restructuring, and plant closings. This work eventually led to the creation of a full-service communications consultancy.

In the not-for-profit sector Tom worked as a government relations consultant and organized a number of successful, grassroots campaigns. He counselled clients on effective issues management and reputation management strategies.

In the government sector Tom has worked for or counselled the Cabinet Office of the Federal, Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia governments. He developed a number of large-scale public consultation and advertising campaigns and managed issues related to government budgets, debt levels and other treasury issues.

In the corporate sector Tom has worked with major businesses and Crown corporations in all regions of the country. Projects have included the closing of warehouses, factories and other facilities, head office downsizing, product quality issues, mergers and acquisitions. Clients have included IBM, Sears Canada, Gillette, Colgate-Palmolive, CIBC, Scotiabank, McNeill Pharmaceutical, Eli Lilly, Imperial Oil, Shell Canada, Continental Can, OMERS, Assante Canada and more than 25 government and public sector agencies.

In addition to issues management advice, Tom has assisted organizations in change management strategies, corporate identity exercises and strategic planning.

Tom has a BAA (journalism) from Ryerson University and an MBA from York University. He teaches at Royal Roads University in the MA in Applied Communication, MBA (Public Relations and Communications specialization) and the Graduate Certificate in Public Relations Management.

Tom has chaired a national conference on communications management and has completed executive development courses in advertising, sales strategies, facilitation and coaching, and change management.
