Cathy McKenzie
As an independent consultant since 1998 Cathy has had the privilege of facilitating and educating in the passionate field of leadership and learning. Her primary focus is developing leaders at all levels and within that umbrella her practice centers on creating space for meaningful communication and dialogue, building and sustaining learning communities and developing dynamic teams. Cathy's client base includes both private and public sectors. She has been an Associate Faculty member with Royal Roads' MA in Leadership and with the Executive Leadership programs, such as Developing Leadership Impact, since 2001. Her own MA studies were completed at RRU in Leadership and Training.

Prior to her graduate studies Cathy's careers were varied and challenging. She spent 15 years as a Registered Nurse in emergency medicine where teamwork was imperative. Through serendipitous opportunities she ended up in another area of public service, working as a Medical Investigator and as the Deputy Regional Coroner in Victoria. From there Cathy became a civilian manager in policing where she enjoyed experiences in management, community development, training, adult learning, and organizational leadership development with the City of Victoria human resources department.

Cathy is a co-founder of Learning By Heart Consulting Inc. and works with her consultant husband, Ed, and with numerous other respected colleagues in the field of leadership. Their consulting practice provides stimulating and rewarding work and their client base includes the ground breaking “Leading the Way” program developed by the BC Public Service Agency.

Cathy cites her most important teachers in her life as her extended family, especially, Ed, and their children, Ryan (wife Sue) and Allie. Cathy has five siblings and grew up in a chaotic Catholic system with fun, laughter and the usual dysfunctions. Cathy is blessed to still have both of her parents who she sees often. Through the shared journey of family and career Cathy has strived to be a curious learner and an active participant in life. She is exhilarated by the joys and challenged by the “not knowing” that surfaces in life.

Cathy dabbles in creative writing and loves to ski on sunny days. In 2006 she and Ed fulfilled a life-long dream of traveling to Greece, which is where her grandfather was born. Their next travel goal is to return to the breathtaking village of Oia on the island of Santorini.
