When Janice introduces herself as a chartered accountant, you can almost hear the yawns. When she introduces herself as a winery owner, the conversation flows.
Janice has a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Calgary. She is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia, holds a Certified Financial Planner certificate, and has a graduate certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University. She has completed many continuing education courses in wine making offered by the University of California at Davis and the Level One of the Wine Spirits and Education Trust program.
Janice is a serial entrepreneur. She opened a chartered accountant practice in Tsawwassen B. C. in 1983, which she sold in 2000. Currently, as J. D. Harkley, CA, she provides accounting and coaching services to corporations that she enjoys working with and that enjoy working with her. In 1992, she cofounded River Run Cottages Bed and Breakfast (
http://www.riverruncottages.com) in Ladner, B. C. which was also sold in 2000. Janice and her husband are the first crazy people to create and operate a winery and bed and breakfast on Salt Spring Island (
http://www.saltspringvineyards.com).
Janice sees herself as being in the business of agritourism and is committed to eating and drinking locally. That being said, she travels an embarrassing amount for business and pleasure, so eating and drinking locally may include products from the canal side markets of Burgundy, the agritourismo lodgings of Italy, or the vineyards of New Zealand.
