While I usually push the boundaries of my
InRoads deadline, I’ve taken this column to new extremes. It’s after midnight, and in less than seven hours I’m boarding a plane to Thailand.
I’ve just tried my backpack on, over-stuffed with too many clothes, three pairs of shoes, and four different kinds of sunscreen, given that I’m prone to catching on fire in warmer climates. One false move swinging that monstrosity on to my shoulders and I’m likely to fall over backward, helpless and struggling like a turtle on its shell.
Travelling is completely new for me, and I’m both excited and anxious. It’s going to be a learning experience I’m not used to, and I hope I won’t learn too many lessons the hard way. What I’ve been telling myself however, is that if I could pull through and complete my
Graduate Certificate in Professional Communication program…I can do this.
I was relieved when my program was over, but lately I’ve found myself missing certain things. I don’t miss the deadlines, or the lack of sleep, but I do miss the friends I made while we bonded over shared stress and anxiety. For the most part we’re trying to keep in touch, and we look for new opportunities to get together.
For this reason, Homecoming 2009 has taken on new meaning for me. Every opportunity to meet with my former class mates is a chance to experience the great things about my program all over again, without experiencing any of the stress.
This year’s Homecoming celebrations taking place on September 11-13, 2009 and will feature a day spent on the water, sailing aboard a Canadian Navy ship, an afternoon with the world-renowned artist, Robert Bateman, and a fun wine tasting event in Hatley Castle.

I hope some of my class mates can make it, and I hope you and your class mates can make it too. For now though, I just hope I’ve remembered to pack everything I need, because I can’t possibly fit any more into my luggage. I also hope I’m not trampled by an elephant, or lost in a jungle, but if I am – I’ll have more than enough outfits to get by.
