The Royal Roads campus is so staggeringly beautiful; it leaves a lasting impression with every person who’s been here. I used to feel that not a bad word could be said about it, until I joined a 10k running clinic through the Royal Roads Recreation Centre.

The wooded trails and spectacular views take on an entirely different perspective when you’re running uphill. Half-way up steep wooded pathways, I’m amazed at the bad words I can come up with, if only I could breathe.

The 10k running clinic is being facilitated through the RRU Recreation Centre, in preparation for the annual Times Colonist 10k Run or Walk, one of the largest road races in Canada. Our recreation centre is known as the friendliest gym in town, and for good reason. The staff and trainers there know almost every member by name, and work hard to personalize all of their services, including this particular clinic.

Running is one way to gain whole new appreciation for campus

As Royal Roads alumni, you’re entitled to a membership discount – the same discount as staff. Many staff members take full advantage of the centre and its programs, which is how approximately 20 RRU staffers, three times a week, find themselves gaining a whole new appreciation for this beautiful campus, while cursing it at the very same time.

We have a tremendous number of alumni in the Victoria area, and I invite all of you to drop by the Recreation Centre and see what’s new.

I’d challenge Victoria-area alumni to enter a team in the Times Colonist 10k to compete against the RRU staff team, but that’s just asking for trouble. I know our alumni are over-achievers by nature, and so I fear losing badly.

For our alumni who don’t live in the Victoria area, watch AlumNet to join the RRU Recreation Centre group for tips and advice from RRU trainers and fellow alumni and a blog I’ll be keeping about my experience from cubicle potato to fleet-footed 10k racer – if I last that long.
